Couples Therapy in Pittsburgh, Built Around Intensives

If you are looking for a couples therapist in Pittsburgh, the first thing to know is that I don't start couples on weekly sessions. My couples work is an intensive, about six clinical hours in all, in person at my Penn Ave office in Pittsburgh or online anywhere in Pennsylvania.

It fits some couples well and others not at all. I would rather you know which before you apply.

Who you would be working with

I'm Emily Zeller, a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) with 14 years of experience. I have completed Level 2 training in the Gottman Method, and I'm a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional (PMH-C), which matters if a baby, a pregnancy, or a hard postpartum season is part of your story. I'm certified in Prepare/Enrich, the assessment I use with every couple.

I'm licensed in Pennsylvania (MF001400), Ohio (F.2000129), and Illinois (166.00106). My practice, Zeller & Co. Therapy, is at 6375 Penn Ave, Suite B, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

What a couples intensive is

An intensive swaps weekly fifty-minute check-ins for concentrated time. It has four steps, and every couple gets the same structure. We tailor what happens inside it.

  1. Apply. You fill out a short application. I read it myself. If it looks like a fit, I reach out about a free consultation and dates.
  2. Individual sessions. About a week before, I meet with each of you separately for 60 minutes. You also complete the Prepare/Enrich assessment online, so I arrive knowing where you agree, where you don't, and where each of you feels stuck.
  3. The 3-hour couples session. One uninterrupted session with both of you, online or in person at my Pittsburgh office. We work on your patterns, how conflict goes, and what safety and closeness look like for you. I use the Gottman Method, among other approaches.
  4. Follow-up. Two to four weeks later, we meet for 60 minutes to look at what held and what didn't. It is included in the price.

That is about six clinical hours in total. It is not a full day, and I won't pretend it is.

Who an intensive fits

An intensive tends to fit couples who:

  • have drifted into roommate mode, or keep having the same argument with different details
  • can't keep a weekly appointment going because of work, kids, or travel
  • want to start with a plan instead of spending the first six weeks on history
  • are both willing to come, and both want the relationship to work
  • are engaged and want to build a foundation before the wedding (that is my Premarital Intensive, same format and price)

Who it does not fit

I will tell you no if this is not the right container. An intensive is not the right fit if:

  • there is an active affair, meaning it is ongoing or the secrecy has not ended
  • there is active addiction that is not being treated
  • either of you has been in a suicidal or acute crisis in the past 12 months
  • conflict at home is unsafe, including any physical, sexual, or controlling behavior
  • one or both of you is undecided about whether to stay and wants help deciding

Each of those situations needs something different first: a steadier, longer-paced setting, or specialized care. If this list describes you, it points to a different first step, and I'm glad to help you find it.

Intensive versus weekly couples counseling in Pittsburgh

Each format suits a different kind of couple.

Weekly counseling spreads the work over months. It suits couples who want a slower pace, need to practice between sessions with a steady check-in, or aren't ready for a long block together. The downside is that each session often starts with catching up, and a hard week can eat the whole hour.

An intensive puts the work into a few focused blocks. It suits couples who would rather concentrate it. The downside is that three hours is demanding, and you leave with a plan, not a finished process.

The cost math. These are estimates, not quotes. Couples sessions in the Pittsburgh area commonly run somewhere between $125 and $300 per session. At those rates, six weekly sessions cost roughly $750 to $1,800, and couples who stay for 20 sessions would pay roughly $2,500 to $6,000. My Couples Intensive is $3,000 for about six clinical hours.

So per clinical hour, an intensive costs more than weekly sessions. What you are paying for is preparation, a longer unbroken block, and a defined start and finish. Whether that is worth it depends on you. I can't promise a result either way, and no honest therapist can.

What it costs and what is included

The Couples Intensive is $3,000, paid in full at booking. That covers:

  • a 60-minute individual session with each partner
  • the Prepare/Enrich assessment and a walkthrough of your results
  • one 3-hour couples session
  • a 60-minute follow-up, 2 to 4 weeks later

You can reschedule once at no charge with at least 7 days' notice. With less notice, or a missed session, the full fee is charged. The full terms are on my Intensives page and in the agreement you sign before we begin.

I don't accept insurance. Many insurers reimburse out-of-network care, so ask yours whether it will. I provide a superbill you can submit for reimbursement.

In person in Pittsburgh or online

You can meet at my office on Penn Ave in Pittsburgh, or online from anywhere in Pennsylvania. I'm also licensed to work online with couples in Ohio and Illinois. Couples in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas use both options. Online works well when you want to be in your own home, and in person works well when you want to leave the house to do something hard together.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer weekly couples counseling in Pittsburgh?

No. My couples work is intensive-first, and I don't start couples on weekly sessions. If weekly counseling is what you want, I'm glad to point you to colleagues who offer it.

How much does couples therapy cost in Pittsburgh?

Per session, couples therapy in the Pittsburgh area commonly runs about $125 to $300, and these are estimates. My Couples Intensive is $3,000, paid in full at booking, for about six clinical hours including a follow-up.

What is a couples intensive?

A couples intensive is a concentrated block of therapy in place of weekly sessions. Mine has four steps: an application, a 60-minute individual session with each partner, one 3-hour couples session, and a 60-minute follow-up 2 to 4 weeks later.

Is a couples intensive better than weekly marriage counseling?

Neither is better in general. An intensive suits couples who want to concentrate the work and can both commit to a long session. Weekly counseling suits couples who want a slower pace and regular practice between sessions.

Who should not do a couples intensive?

Couples dealing with an active affair, active addiction, a crisis or suicidality in the past 12 months, unsafe conflict, or one partner who is undecided about staying should start somewhere else. I will tell you plainly if I think that is you.

Is marriage counseling with you in person or online?

Both. I see couples in person at 6375 Penn Ave, Suite B in Pittsburgh, or online anywhere in Pennsylvania. I'm also licensed in Ohio and Illinois.

Does insurance cover a couples intensive?

No, I don't bill insurance. Many insurers reimburse out-of-network therapy, so it is worth asking yours. I provide a superbill you can submit.

What training do you have in couples therapy?

I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist with 14 years of experience, and I've completed Level 2 training in the Gottman Method. I'm also a PMH-C and certified in Prepare/Enrich.

Ready to see if it fits?

If you read the "who it fits" list and nodded, the next step is small. Fill out the short application, and I'll read it myself and reach out about a free consultation.
